Nevada Library Association Handbook

Board of Trustees
Appointed Officers & Standing Committees

Awards

HISTORY
The Nevada Library Association's first constitution provided for honorary membership for "persons who have rendered important service to library interests or to the cause of education in general," and this continued to be an option until the bylaws were revised in 1977. In 1963, the board decided to begin awarding "Librarian of the Year" and "Trustee of the Year" but these were apparently dropped after 1967, and replaced, at that time, with a more general "Special Citation." In 1978 Awards became a standing committee and in early 1979, the board established the "Dorothy McAlinden Award" for outstanding service to, or on behalf of, the association, which is rendered by a member who is not a professional library employee. It carries a stipend of $100.00.

Since that time in 1986 the "Librarian of the Year" and "Trustee of the Year" awards have been reinstated.

PURPOSE AND DUTIES

  1. The president appoints a member of the Association to serve as the Awards Chairperson.
  2. The Awards Chairperson along with the president, president-elect and the past president make up the Awards chairperson committee. In the event that one or more of them is nominated for an award, the president appoints replacement(s) to the committee from the list of past presidents, starting with the most recent and working back.
  3. The Awards chairperson solicits nominations from the membership as a whole by publishing an article and the awards criteria in the May/June issue of the Nevada Libraries. The article should also include a copy of the nomination form. The Awards chairperson also solicits nominations from the Board.
  4. Nominations must be submitted in writing to the Awards chairperson or one of the other members of the Awards committee by the last Friday in August prior to the Annual Conference. Late nominations will be returned to the person making the nomination. Late nominations may be resubmitted in the next calendar year.
  5. The Awards committee reviews the slate of nominees submitted, verifies that they are members (if applicable) and ensures that the nominees being considered have demonstrated meritorious and/or outstanding service/contributions. The documentation submitted by the member making the nomination will be used in this review process. If further documentation is needed, the Awards chairperson will contact the person making the nomination to request further information. The Awards committee may reject a nominee if it is determined that supporting documentation does not sufficiently support giving an award. Such a rejection is made by consensus of the committee. If a rejection is made the person who has made the nomination is notified by registered letter stating the reason for the rejection. This letter is prepared and sent by the Awards Chair. The Awards committee can move a nominee to a more appropriate award category if need be.
  6. No more than one Librarian of the Year and Trustee of the Year awards may be given in the same calendar year. No more than five Special Citations may be given in the same calendar year. No more than one Dorothy McAlinden award may be given in the same calendar year.
  7. The Awards committee by consensus approves the awards given and to whom the awards will be given. The Awards chairperson notifies the Executive Secretary of the results of the ballot, and contacts both the people who made the nominations and the recipients. Recipients whenever possible are in attendance at the Conference to receive their awards. If they cannot attend, the Awards chairperson arranges with the individuals who made the nominations to have an appropriate designee accept the award in their behalf.
  8. The Awards chairperson is responsible for selecting suitable plaques, certificates, etc. in accordance with the Awards manual.
  9. The Awards chairperson submits a budget request to cover the expense of the anticipated plaques, certificates, balloting expenses in the same manner as other offices.
  10. Letters or other forms of recognition may be used at the Board's discretion.
